Summer arrived right on cue as five ladies from Mersea and Langenhoe threw open their garden gates, served tea and scones and raised more than £1300 for the Cancer Centre Campaign.
There were private tours of the spectacular gardens and then a welcoming cream tea on the terrace. It was a proper summer tea party served by organisers Gill Crayston and Fiona Rose, with 40 or so ladies enjoying scones donated by The Art Café and clotted cream from the East of England Co-operative Society.
Colin Bennett, a member of the Cancer Centre Campaign executive, spoke of the desperate need to complete the new Centre at Colchester General Hospital and make things that much easier for cancer patients and their families.
“There are lots of good causes out there but I believe this one really deserves our support,” he said. “If we can raise another £880,000 by February we have an anonymous donor who will give the £1 million needed to reach the Campaign target and complete this much needed Cancer Centre.
